As our Vergers for the Church, Christine and Tony greet and welcome people as they come to services, and make sure that the church is ready for services.

'The Office of Verger is an ancient one and comes from The ‘Verge’ which is the rod of office (Latin – Virga; Old French – Vergier), and was used to ensure that the many processions were not impeded during worship. This was an important duty in the Middle Ages.

Today, Vergers continue to have an important ceremonial role, but add management responsibilities, with the care of people and a variety of other duties, including the behind-the-scenes management of worship and the care of vestments, plate and other valuable objects'. (The Church of England Guild of Vergers)

We still have processions in services, and Tony carries the cross for Communion services, he also assists our Priest, Daniel, with the preparation for Holy Communion.

They both undertake many other voluntary jobs as part of our team including organising and supporting events, cleaning the church, organising refreshments, fixing things, making our new planters and bird boxes, watering the plants etc....

Christine co-leads the Rejoice services with Elinor Noble, our Lay Reader, and often leads prayers in our Rejoice and Holy Communion services.

In their spare time they are involved in the Sheffield Folk Chorale and Beighton Community Choir.
